MKDS Tournament (Go Away for a Few Months)
« on: September 23, 2006, 06:42:33 pm »
Bam. First post nuked in favor of rules.

Rules

1) Snaking is allowed. Not snaking is also allowed.
2) Braking/using reverse near an item box is not allowed. In addition, 'A' must be held at all times, unless backing away from a wall.
3) PRB is not allowed. In other words, if your opponent is snaking offroad without a loss of speed, say something.
4) In the event that you are shown finishing first, or you tie with someone else, whoever is awarded 10 points for the win is granted the win for that match. Why? Lag.
5) Preset courses must be selected. Each round will have its own courses that must be chosen. If, for whatever reason, a course not meant to be selected is and is played (simply selecting, say, Figure 8 and not having it chosen will not matter), then whoever selected that course is given a loss for that track, regardless of the results. It sounds Draconian, but come on. It's necessary. Who wants to face someone only selecting a few courses they're good at?
6) Both players must agree, via chat or forum pm, that the set will be ranked in the tournament. The results of an undeclared set should not be reported.
7) Sets will be played "Round Robin" style. This means that everyone will try to play everyone else once. When posting the results in this topic, include who you faced, how many sets were played (only matters in the event of a double or triple draw), and the results of each set (either 2-2 all, 3-1 someone, or 4-0 someone). After everyone plays everyone else, or a week expires, a scoring system will be used to determine place based on each course (3 points for a win 0 points for a loss). For now, the bottom player will be dropped from each round or, in the event of a tie, a sudden death match consisting of 2 Figure 8's and 2 RR's will be played, the loser not advancing to the next round.

In the event of special rules for a round, follow the given instructions. Do not begin a round until told.

Make sure everyone listed is on your friends...list. The list of players or "playas"  is as follows:

1) genus: 283530-227259
2) Groudon199: 107434-689727
3) Thorn: 438149-010632
4)  yse: 352266-049524
5) PsyBorg: 322184-353188
6) RPG: ?-? (damnit RPG repost your code)
7) Turbos: 201926-809098

The courses to be played, in any order, for round 1 are as follows (you can blame Spinny for this one...):

1) Yoshi Falls
2) Luigi's Mansion
3) Luigi Circuit
4) Baby Park

Starting tommorow, play to your heart's content. now! now! strike while the iron is hot!

I'm thinking a 4-player tournament would be a good idea.  A 2-player tournament doesn't seem right.  4-player races are more exciting, as you know, genus (and pretty much everyone else here).

I'll probably never reach championship, but hey, to me, it's for fun, so I guess I'll do it.

Also, just curious, how exactly will this tournament work?

On a seperate note, a one-on-one tourney would be cool, but I'm worried that some may lie about who won, and a 4 player FFA tourney sounds cool too. It's not really my choice, you guys decide on whatever you want.

I'm not sure that 4 player would work. I mean, we have enough players for a 2 player MKDS tournament, but a 4 player stretches it a little thin. However, I do have another idea.

Round-robins. This way, lucky items and the like are nonissues. Everyone winds up playing everyone else and after everyone has done so, the bottom few are dropped. Then it divides into regular matches, only with a whacky whacky twist. Would it be too gimmicky to put in place some sort of team system for the semifinals and have the members of that team face each other? Quite possibly.

The round robin will most likely be 4 players but don't rule out 2 and in fact help me decide which to use.

Er, no, but I sorta got the idea.

Genus proposed a round-robin tournament, we agreed, I pitched Skype as a possible way to communicate during the tourney, discussion of teaming up during the tournament was raised but not really followed through with.

Oh yeah, and RPG said he'd join if he could borrow a copy of the game.

RPG borrowed it from chuck, and I've trained him to at least a B-Class snaker. Soon to suck less, if my cruel regimen is to be enacted upon him.

I would be pro skype, but I'm seeing a few statements of paying "low rates per minute" over long distance. And as Australia and North America are far apart, well...

It's free, from what I've gathered, but only for certain areas. So, I don't know. I don't have a mic or speakers, but I'm sure that could be worked out easily enough.

Also Thorn, wait for my pm.

On second thoughts, the odds of me competing are not particularly high.

Make a time and date and I'll try to fit in, but I make no guarantees. (Note that I have three weeks off school before exams, so any day of the week is fine.)

Well, I'm really just waiting for a few people to join. I was waiting on Turbos, Sprint, PK, and SDM, and now that Turbos is entering, you all know who to pester into submission.

I'm thinking that regardless of what happens, this begins on Friday, correct time (EST for the pedantic). I mean, it will be the weekend. The weekend man! We get enough matches in when it's the weekdays. Imagine the weekend!

Hope that helps anyone planning on playing.

Any day's fine by me, but if it's on a weekday, it has to be after 3:00 EDT.  I get home from school at 2:30, but I need 30 minutes to recover from the stress at school.

I think nothing should be set at a certain time. It should be adaptable. And remember, if you don't do this and you end up setting a time I can't attend (i.e. before school is done with for the day), then I probably won't be able to compete.

This isn't going to be an "ohsnap everyone race at (x) time" kind of thing. Remember, it's a round robin tourney. Play who you can when you can, and it will all come out in the wash. Starting Friday of course.

In other words, if the chatroom is dead there won't be many people to play; conversely, if it's active then make it a point to look for others in the tournament and play them (only once for ranking I might add).

So relative time is not an issue kthx.

As everyone that's faced me knows, the only way I could not place 1st overall is if I make many huge errors or if items play a huge factor.  So as long as those things don't happen too often (items=too random to predict), I'll have the tournament in the bag.

I almost beat you in my first race with you.

And in the first set of 4 races we did, Sprint beat you.

Dont be so sure your going to win.

As I said, those errors can cost me 1st overall.

And that was a pretty close finish.  But that was because SDM was goofing off in last and Sprint chose the wrong kart with Daisy.

Starting Friday?  Aw crap, I'm moving this weekend and I'm not gonna be on WiFi for days.  Matter of fact, if I can't get DSL at my next house I'm screwed.  I was really hoping that it would take longer to get competitors.  I'll figure something out, but don't wait on me.  There'll be more tourneys.

Ok, so on second though the starting date of the tournament is getting pushed back, likely sometime next week (Thursday maybe?). Not just to accomodate Thorn, but to  get people "pumped" "up". Plus, it's looking like more people are not going to make it that week, and a round robin tourney doesn't work as well with 5 people. Or however many we have, it's probably less.

This is the last (and only) time I plan on pushing it back. If you have problems, move on. Or work around them. But hey, you can easily get in a few matches over a week or so.

EDIT: Friday. May as well start on the weekend. And I have rules made out, expect those to be posted on Thursday.

I just had to revive this topic.  Is the tournament still on?
And I can play the offline courses as well online.  So if you end up racing me, you might get a chance to race on a course not normally selectable online.  I think Sprint can do this as well IIRC.

Okay, sounds good. I won't be able to play tomorrow as I'll be out all day (as I will every Saturday hence for a couple of months), but I'll try and make some time on Sunday to organise a match.  (That's Saturday night for you silly Americans.)

Read the rules. Discuss anything wrong with them as you see it.

And try to determine how I picked the courses based on 2,4,8, 6,32,64,128, and 256.

Oh and by "Luigi Circuit", I mean the GameCube version. I want to shoot down any mistakes. Before they happen.

Let the games commence!
